The family action-adventure is set in the near-future where the sport of boxing has gone high-tech. Charlie Kenton, played by Hugh Jackman, is a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring. Now nothing but a small-time promoter, Charlie earns just enough money piecing together low-end bots from scrap metal to get from one underground boxing venue to the next. When Charlie hits rock bottom, he reluctantly teams up with his estranged son Max (played by Canadian actor Dokota Goyo) to build and train a championship contender. As the stakes in the brutal, no-holds-barred arena are raised, Charlie and Max, against all odds, get one last shot at a comeback.

Many of you know that I am a proud kitchen volunteer and board member for Brown Bagging For Calgary's Kids ( BB4CK) and I am humbled every Monday morning that I get to help make lunches for needy Calgary school children. Even though I have been doing this for over two years, I still am moved when I try to imagine that there are kids in our city that go hungry everyday. When I talk to people about what BB4CK does, they are also shocked that there are thousands of kids that go without food in a rich city like Calgary and they always are looking for ways to help.

As part of BB4CK's tenth anniversary, the organization has laid out many different ways the public can get involved. This month, we have challenged Calgarians to "go a day without food" on January 24 and share their thoughts with everyone. While I understand that it may not be feasible to go a whole day with out food, many people have stated that they want to get involved by giving up one meal, their favorite snack or will attempt to go without something that is important to them for the day. What can you give up?

 I cannot believe that my son Kyron is two years old.  It just seems like yesterday that our little Mon-Ky came into our world and shook it upside down!  Kyron truly is a blessing and we have cherished every day with him.  He has turned out to be quite the funny boy and really is a social butterfly!

When it comes to young children meeting Santa Claus, parents never can be prepared for what is going to happen.  Last year was Kyron's first Christmas and he was not a fan of Santa at all.( See last years post here.)   Even though Kyron is one year older and loves to talk about Santa, we were not sure how he would react when he met the jolly old elf!  We had the chance to meet Santa last weekend at a private Christmas function last weekend and here is a quick video to highlight what happened...




He was a little hesitant at first, but ended up hugging Santa.  He eventually went back once all the kids were finished and had a little chat with him.  I am not sure what creature Santa pulled out of the bag, but the Christmas rodent was definitely a first for me. 

Kyron had a blast this past weekend at his first attempt at Skating!  His Grandma had purchased some 'Bob-Skates' for him so he could join us at a Christmas skating party at the Olympic Oval.  We were not sure if he would be interested in trying this, but he surprised us all with his enthusiasm.

 In typical Kyron fashion, after only a few minutes of trying to skate, he decided that he did not want anyone to hold him while he tried to glide on the ice!  He even got tired of holding on to the skate trainer thing and wanted to try it on his own.  This did not work out so well, but I give him kudos for his independent streak, even at 23 months old.

 While Becky and I do not have any aspirations for him to be the next great skater, I think its important for him to try new things.  And as long as he likes it and has fun, it is something that we can continue to do as a family.

 He seemed to love it and I hope to get him out more this winter.  I wonder what the average age to start skating is?
