Kyron Meets Santa...What A Difference A Year Makes.

8:40 AM Posted by CalgaryDaddy

When it comes to young children meeting Santa Claus, parents never can be prepared for what is going to happen.  Last year was Kyron's first Christmas and he was not a fan of Santa at all.( See last years post here.)   Even though Kyron is one year older and loves to talk about Santa, we were not sure how he would react when he met the jolly old elf!  We had the chance to meet Santa last weekend at a private Christmas function last weekend and here is a quick video to highlight what happened...

He was a little hesitant at first, but ended up hugging Santa.  He eventually went back once all the kids were finished and had a little chat with him.  I am not sure what creature Santa pulled out of the bag, but the Christmas rodent was definitely a first for me.

Kyron's First Time Skating!

8:29 AM Posted by CalgaryDaddy

Kyron had a blast this past weekend at his first attempt at Skating!  His Grandma had purchased some 'Bob-Skates' for him so he could join us at a Christmas skating party at the Olympic Oval.  We were not sure if he would be interested in trying this, but he surprised us all with his enthusiasm.

In typical Kyron fashion, after only a few minutes of trying to skate, he decided that he did not want anyone to hold him while he tried to glide on the ice!  He even got tired of holding on to the skate trainer thing and wanted to try it on his own.  This did not work out so well, but I give him kudos for his independent streak, even at 23 months old.

While Becky and I do not have any aspirations for him to be the next great skater, I think its important for him to try new things.  And as long as he likes it and has fun, it is something that we can continue to do as a family.

Here is a quick video of Kyron skating!

He seemed to love it and I hope to get him out more this winter.  I wonder what the average age to start skating is?

My Second Birthday Party, Circa 1979 ( Via Grandpa's Old Vintage Super 8 Tapes!)

7:33 PM Posted by CalgaryDaddy

I love finding old treasures!  About ten ago while looking through my old photo albums, I noticed a picture of my Grandfather holding an old Super 8 camera at my second birthday party.  When I asked him if he had the old films, I was surprised when he dug them out of storage and gave them to me.  I could never figure out how to use the projector and after numerous failed attempts, I ended up breaking the darn machine.  Since I had no way of playing these old film reels, I put them into storage myself where they have sat since 2001.

My Grandfather passed away in 2007 and I am so thankful that he gave me these films.  Passing through Costco in July, I noticed that they had a sale on "Film to DVD" conversions.  Since I have no video footage of myself as a child, I jumped at the chance to actually see what was on these old film canister's.  I was so happy to be able to watch my second birthday party on DVD!

Here is a clip.... ( Even in 1979, I had good hair!)

It really is surreal to see yourself so young, but its even stranger to see your parents in their 20's.  I found myself getting quite emotional watching this for the first time and it really is priceless to me.  ( I felt like Clark Griswold in the attic on National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation)

Parents today are lucky to have access to easy HD Video technology to take videos of their family.  Seeing this video really makes me glad that Becky and I take as much video of Kyron as possible.  My only regret is that my Grandpa was not in this film.

I miss him like crazy and I am so thankful that he took the time to record this and share it with me.

Kyron's Imaginary Phone Conversations!

8:30 AM Posted by CalgaryDaddy

Our 16 month old son Kyron already has quite the imagination.  One of his favorite games is to pretend to talk on the phone!  If you ask Kyron, "are you calling Grandpa?", he will put his hand to his ear and say hello!

I caught him a few weeks ago on camera with the actual phone, pretending to talk.  I am not sure who he was "talking to", but it looks like a great conversation.

Kyron's Trip to Victoria and Seattle

10:41 AM Posted by CalgaryDaddy

We had the good fortune to travel to Victoria and Seattle last month and I thought I would share some pictures.  Becky's Grandma, Aunt and cousins live in Victoria and this was the first time I had been able to travel there.  It really was a beautiful city ( and has the mildest climate in Canada) and I cannot wait to go back.

Here are some pictures:

At the petting zoo!  Kyron loves animals so much.

Look Mommy....a spider! ( at the Victoria Bug Zoo!)

A couple of prairie boys at the ocean!

This is outside of the Empress Tea Room.  I love the contrast as the vines have not started blooming on the side of the hotel yet.

Since we were so close to Seattle, we decided to jump on the "clipper" ( its like a passenger boat...think bus, not a ferry) and head to Seattle for a few days also.  I have never been to Seattle and I was super excited.  This is also a beautiful, clean city and I had a great time.  The shopping was amazing and we love the fact that they waived the Washington State sales tax to residents of Alberta!

We did the typical "touristy" things while there:

The Space Needle of course!  I am ashamed to admit that I have not been up the Calgary Tower since I was in grade six and this really made me want to check it out again!

The Experience Music Project!  This was a cool, interactive music "museum".  While focusing on all music, it played tribute to Seattle's famous music scene and had extensive exhibitions on Nirvana and Jimi Hendrix among others.

The Pike Place Market was one of the coolest markets I have ever been to.  It really is an adventure in itself and I am envious that Calgary is lacking such a cool landmark.  The market is over 100 years old and is packed with different vendors.  Definitely a sight to see.

I cannot wait to head back to Seattle one day to catch a Seahawks and Mariners game!

Kyron Loves His Great Grandma!

6:30 AM Posted by CalgaryDaddy

Becky, Kyron and I had the opportunity to travel to Vancouver Island to visit Becky's Great Grandma last month and it was a blast.  Even though I only live one province over, this was the first time I was able to visit the Victoria area.  It is simply one of the most amazing places I have ever been to and with its temperate climate ( some call it the California of Canada....) I can see why so many people choose to retire there.

Kyron has met his Great Grandma once before, as I outlined in the post here.  He really took to her and affectionately calls her "G.G."( Gee...Gee...) which is too cute.  He loved being able to explore a new house and I am pleased to confirm that none of GG's antiques where broken during the visit!

Here are a few cute pics...

This is classic goofball Kyron...climbing on chairs!

So cute!

I had a great time on the Island and cannot wait to visit again.....I already miss GG's amazing porridge every morning!

Creating an Effective Nightly Routine for our Little Ones

7:14 PM Posted by CalgaryDaddy

As parents, Becky and I have found that having an effective night time routing has been essential in establishing a harmonious night with Kyron.  He has become such a creature of habit that if we wander off our established routine, its hard for him to get in the mood for his sleep time!

For the past few months, Becky and I have always followed the same basic routine.  After supper, I head upstairs and bath Kyron, followed by some playtime until 7pm rolls around.   By then, Kyron is usually ready to doze off after a long day of play!  I had the opportunity to try some of the awesome JOHNSON’S® Bed Time products to see if they would help in our routine.

This line of Bed Time products really is amazing and Kyron seems to enjoy the soothing scents.  This lineup is clinically proven to help improve your baby's sleeps and includes:

  • Johnson's Bedtime Bath,  Johnson's Bedtime Lotion and Johnson's Bedtime Shampoo.
These products are available everywhere and I would encourage you to try them to see if they are right for your family.

The folks at Johnson also provided me with some tips to share, to help parents create an effective nightly routine for their own little ones, which I have included below.

Whether your little one is a newborn or toddler, developing a bedtime routine can lead to a good night’s sleep and will help to ensure your baby is getting the rest she needs. JOHNSON’S® clinically proven three-step routine includes a warm bath, soothing massage and quiet time which will help drift her off to sleep.

Here are some sleep time tips and ideas to help as your baby continues to grow and develop:

The first few weeks of your newborn’s life are all about adjustment – for your baby and for you. Newborns can sleep up 18 hours a day – but never for more than three or four hours at a time. Though it’s too soon to expect structured sleep patterns, there are some key things to keep in mind:

• Learn Your Baby’s Sleepy Signs: Every baby is special and has a different way of showing you they are tired. Learn your little one’s signals which could include becoming fussy, crying or rubbing their eyes.

• Night & Day: Keep lights on and normal volume levels around the house while your baby sleeps during the day. At night, turn off the lights and keep the ambiance calm and quiet. This will help your little one sleep the longest at night and also start to learn the difference between night and day.

• Join in Naptime: It’s tempting to use your newborn’s naptime to finish chores, but be sure you use this opportunity as a time to catch up on your own sleep.

• Expect Wake Up Calls: Respond to your baby as soon as they wake up. Most newborns are unable to settle themselves on their own and will need your help to be lulled back to sleep.

Between three and six months old, your baby will be able to sleep longer during the night – which is great news for tired mommies and daddies! Your little one is also beginning to understand the difference between night and day, making it the perfect time to help develop their nightly routine.

• A Lasting Routine: Make sure your baby’s bedtime routine is not too long or impractical and make sure you adapt it at your baby gets older. According to a recent Babycenter.ca over 70 per cent of respondents said they had a bedtime routine they followed nightly.

• Bedtime Bath: Help your baby relax before bed by including bathing in her nightly routine. Some warm water and a lullaby can help soothe your little one into the land of nod. JOHNSON’S® Bedtime Bath®, formulated with NATURALCALM™, a unique blend of patent- pending essences proven to have relaxing properties is a great addition to the nightly bath.

• Soothing to Sleep: Put your little one to bed when she is drowsy but still awake; this will help her learn to soothe herself to sleep.

• How Much Sleep?: Your infant will sleep between 13 to 15 hours each day. Every baby is different and your little one may need more or less sleep.

By six months your baby will be starting to sleep through the night – a wonderful milestone for her tired parents! As your little one becomes busier with crawling, clapping and “talking,” it’s more important than ever to make sure she’s getting the rest she needs.

• Growing Sleepy: Your baby’s physical advances, such as rolling over and beginning to stand, can influence her sleep patterns. Don’t be discouraged if your baby temporarily wakes up in the middle of the night. Stick to your routine to help your little one return to a regular sleep pattern.

• Keep Naptime: Cutting down on naps won’t help your little one sleep longer during the night, in fact, sleep begets sleep!

• Bedtime Bonding: According to a recent Babycenter.ca survey conducted on behalf of JOHNSON’S® Baby, less than half of respondents (45 per cent) view bedtime as an opportunity to bond with their baby. Developing a regular nightly routine including a calm environment, bath and massage for your baby helps her drift off to dreamland while giving you precious bonding time. Try a nightly massage with JOHNSON’S® Bedtime Lotion®, with skin-conditioning emollients and formulated with NATURALCALM™ to help lull her into sleep.

• Fix Problem Habits: Rocking, cuddling and feeding your baby to sleep are major causes of sleep problems, so it’s best to try to break these habits early if you’ve established them.

• How Much Sleep?: Your baby will need about 14 to 15 hours of sleep each day. Crawling, rolling over, sitting up – an active baby means a tired baby.

As your little one continues to grow it’s important they still receive lots of attention, cuddling and sleep. Though they may have moved “beyond babyhood,” it’s important to maintain a consistent nightly routine to help your toddler fall asleep on her own.

• Changing Sleep Patterns: Your toddler’s sleep patterns will change throughout the next year. Although most toddlers will have learned to sleep through the night, change and stressful events such as an illness or trip may cause temporary setbacks to your routine.

• “Big Kid” Bed: You may consider transitioning your little one to a toddler bed at the two-year mark. It’s important to keep in mind that switching your toddler to a bed too early could be disruptive to their sleep routine. You may want to wait until your little one is almost three years old before making the transition.

• Daycare Dreams: If your toddler has started daycare or preschool, her nap time may be shifted to accommodate the need of an entire group of children. During this time it’s important to ensure she is getting plenty of sleep at night.

• How Much is Enough?: Toddlers need between 12 and 13 hours of sleep in total – usually 11 to 12 hours at night and another one to three hours during the day.

I hope this info helps!

Creepy Sesame Street Video! Big Bird Meets Snuffaluffagus

8:56 AM Posted by CalgaryDaddy

I just had to share this funny ( creepy) video that I came across.  This vintage Sesame Street video shows how Big Bird and Snuffaluffagus first met back in the 1970's.  Take a look at this video, especially when they flash back to the original meeting and try not to laugh.

I am not sure what the costume designers where thinking when they designed Snuffy, but he looks like a serious crack head!  Even Big Bird looks like he got some "feather plugs" in the 1980's  to fill in his bald spots.  Creeeeepy!

I can imagine that many kids in the 70's would have been scared stiff by this creepy version of Snuffy!

Disney's Mars Needs Moms Movie Review!

8:39 AM Posted by CalgaryDaddy

I had the opportunity to attend an advance screening of Disney's newest movie, Mars Needs Moms last weekend!  Becky, Austin and I dropped Kyron off at his grandma's for a quick visit and we headed out for some 10am popcorn!  This was the first time I have ever been to a 3D movie and I thought it was pretty amazing.

The movie is fun for kids of all ages and mixes in a great storyline with the right amount of action and humour. ( Parents will like the offbeat humour also, as there are some funny 1980's references!)

I would recommend this movie to anyone as it is pretty entertaining.  The 3D special effects are simply amazing and it really is a cool experience.

Produced by the team behind “Disney’s A Christmas Carol” and “The Polar Express,” “Mars Needs Moms” showcases nine-year-old Milo’s (Seth Green) quest to save his mom (Joan Cusack) from Martians—a wild adventure in Disney Digital 3D™ and IMAX® 3D that involves stowing away on a spaceship, navigating an elaborate, multi-level planet and taking on the alien nation and their leader (Mindy Sterling).
Take out the trash, eat your broccoli—who needs moms, anyway? Nine-year-old Milo (Seth Green) finds out just how much he needs his mom (Joan Cusack) when she’s nabbed by Martians who plan to steal her mom-ness for their own young. Produced by the team behind “Disney’s A Christmas Carol” and “The Polar Express,” “Mars Needs Moms” showcases Milo’s quest to save his mom—a wild adventure in Disney Digital 3D™ and IMAX® 3D that involves stowing away on a spaceship, navigating an elaborate, multi-level planet and taking on the alien nation and their leader (Mindy Sterling). With the help of a tech-savvy, underground earthman named Gribble (Dan Fogler) and a rebel Martian girl called Ki (Elisabeth Harnois), Milo just might find his way back to his mom—in more ways than one.

Here is the video trailer!

Ford Electric Vehicles Made Easy!

10:02 AM Posted by CalgaryDaddy

With the advancement of electric vehicle technology, I personally find it hard to keep up with all of the terminology of these different types of electric options.  Ford has put out a simple, easy to understand video that really explains the difference between the new electric/hybrid options available.

I love the fact that you do not have to be a car buff or engineer to understand the different options available! These types of vehicles really are the wave of the future and I cannot wait to learn more about them.

I think that there is a lot of misconception about the practicality of the hybrid/electric vehicles and how these options will fit into many families future buying decisions!

What are your thoughts on the electric/hybrid vehicles?

Kyron's Sesame Street Couch

8:58 AM Posted by CalgaryDaddy

In an attempt to feed Kyron's obsession with all things Sesame Street, Becky and I broke down and bought him his first plush chair.  He fell in love with this style of pull out sofa couch when visiting his friend Kingston a few weeks back and we just had to get him one.  The darn chair cost $50 and I can assure you that I never had any $50 sofa bed! ( Well, except in my first apartment when I was 19 years old.....)

Every morning without fail, Kyron takes his Elmo toys off of the couch and pulls it out into its bed position.  He loves this chair so much!

Here is a quick video, where he tries to show me every character on the bed!

Kyron loves it when Becky lays on it and pretends to sleep!  So cute!

Kyron's Parent and Tot Swimming Lessons

9:15 AM Posted by CalgaryDaddy

Kyron and I recently finished his second level of Parent/Tot swim classes and it was a blast!  The classes where held at the Southland Leisure Centre, which is the same pool that I spent the majority of my Saturdays as a kid!  The classes where really fun and are just intended to get the kids used to the water.  The majority of the time is spent singing such hits as "Tommy The Turtle", "Fishy Wishy" and the platinum hit, "Herman The Worm"!

Kyron loves the pool, except for when he floats on his back and the water hits his ears.  He was also not a huge fan of the waves and preferred to spend his time trying to find the 15 ft shark, bird and monkey statues.

Here is a quick video of the last class we took.... ( this was the only time we tried the life jacket and he hated wearing it!)

I can't wait for his next set of lessons!
