Retro TV Friday: Harriets Magic Hats!

12:54 PM Posted by CalgaryDaddy

In my old age, I find that I am getting fonder of the cartoons and TV shows that I liked to watch as a kid! As usual on my Retro TV Friday posts, I try to share some love with the obscure shows from the 1980's. Fitting nicely into the obscure title is "Harriet's Magic Hats"!
Harriet's Magic Hats was a TV series created by ACCESS TV,  ( Alberta's version of PBS!)  which aired on Alberta's ACCESS TV and TVOntario from 1980 - 1986. The premise was an aunt named Harriet who had a trunk full of magic hats in her attic. Her young niece was transported to a place related to the hat she chose from the trunk. For example, if she wore a chef's hat from the trunk, the girl was transported to a kitchen with professional chefs, where she would learn about the profession. The show was 15 minutes long, and gave children a diverse view of the working world.  Just what every 8 year old Albertan needs!
The show was actually quite interesting when I was a kid because there was usually nothing else on at 3pm.  Seriously, I liked how she was magically transported ( with low budget Canadian TV Special effects) to a job site or store.  I never understood why Aunt Harriet had all those hats in the attic or where they came from?  Also, I don't think I ever remember seeing Aunt Harriet much in the show, but thankfully her talking ( Puppet) Parrot Ralph was always there to babysit!
Once in the mid 1980's they actually filmed the show on street as these two red headed Irish twins ( how original for child actors....) that lived on my block were guest starring in one of the episodes.  It was neat to see the camera crew filming it.  I am surprised the director did not pluck me from the crowd and whisk me and my baby blues away to LA for screen tests, but I guess he didn't have a real eye for talent? is a clip.  Warning: The theme song is still stuck in my head from 1985, so be careful!

Happy Friday!

Great Falls Road Trip!

8:41 AM Posted by CalgaryDaddy

A couple of weeks ago, Becky and I decided on a whim to head down to Great Falls, Montana for a quick weekend getaway with baby Kyron.  We went down there last October for the first time to do some shopping and we were amazed at the deals.  The drive is only 4.5 hours from Calgary and the city is covered with cars carrying Alberta license plates as it is the closest American city to the boarder.

 Here are some random shots...

Kyron was a really good traveller again.  It was a three hour drive from the Calgary to the USA Border, and he was a perfect angel until five minutes before we hit the Montana line when he got hungry.  Unfortunately, we had to wait 30 minutes to get through the border crossing.  Yikes!

Once we got through and Kyron ate, it was smooth sailing once again!

I find it kind of funny that we live in a city of 1.1 Million people yet we drive to a little town of 70,000 to shop?  Some of the deals in the USA are just too great to pass up and they have some stores there that Calgary does not have yet, namely Target!

We will be back next year again to kill a weekend and drop some cash on clothes and other stuff for Kyron.  Maybe next time I will actually pull myself away from the mall long enough to check out the "Great Fall's" that the city is named after.

Beaners Fun Cuts for Kids "Cuts For A Cause' Program To Help Needy Parents!

8:30 AM Posted by CalgaryDaddy

Quite often, I am approached to help spread the word about local and national charity initiatives on my blog.  I really believe in a lot of these charities and I will try to post on as many of the requests as possible over the coming months!  It is my small way of helping and giving back!

I was pleased to hear about that a local company, Beaner's Fun Cuts for Kids, was going to be running a great charity event later this month and I thought I would share it on my blog!

Helping Kids Get a Head Start for Back 2 SchoolBeaners Fun Cuts for Kids collects funds and school supplies for children in need

Calgary, Alberta – As the lazy days of summer turn into brisk fall mornings, kids and parents alike will be getting ready for the much anticipated “back to school” frenzy. Topping parents list of to dos is to get their children haircuts, new clothing and school supplies. Sadly, many parents can’t afford the much-needed supplies for their children that many kids take for granted. Beaners recognizes this problem and has teamed up with the local United Way Chapter to provide disadvantaged children with a helping hand to start the school year off right.
With the help of the United Way, Beaners will collect and distribute un-opened school supplies for the month of August. The United Way will help by getting these school supplies into the little hands that need them. Beaners will also be donating $1.00 from each haircut during the week of August 21- August 28, to help raise additional funds for disadvantaged children.

“Back to School” is an exciting time for so many children, and we want to ensure that it’s a fun and exciting time for all children,” says Debbie Bertie, President, Beaners Fun Cuts for Kids. Each of our stores will be outfitted with drop boxes where parents and children can bring in their donations of un-opened school supplies. Not only will this effort be helping disadvantaged families, but it will also teach kids about the importance of helping others.”
Giving and Getting Back too!

In addition to children helping others they will also have the chance to win a prize themselves. From August 21-28 when kids come in for a haircut they will have the chance to enter a colouring contest. The prize is a $140 family gift basket chalked full of goodies to get the entire family ready for back to school including:

· A free hair cut, shampoo and conditioner from Beaners

· A Head Snuggler ( travel accessory

· Picky? Not me Mom! Cookbook with great lunch and snack ideas (

· Bugalug hair accessories (

· 2 stainless steel Otterbottles for kids lunch bags (

· A gift certificate from Little Soles for a new pair of shoes (

“At Beaners we want to ensure that both parent and child have the best haircut experience they can.” continues Bertie. “This back to school season kids will receive the trendiest hair cut in an environment that is fun, comfortable and exciting for kids and relaxing for parents while simultaneously bringing happiness to other children in different situations than their own.”
