Blogtrotting: Putting the "Calgary" In Calgarydaddy!

8:45 PM Posted by CalgaryDaddy

When I came across cool blog called Blogtrotting, I was impressed with the neat blog idea!  ( You know the "why didn't I think of that" moment!) I was happy when Cara asked me to do a short blog post about my hometown....Calgary!

I never thought about it before, but I am sure that many of the people who come to wonder what the heck a "Calgary" is?  Is it the name of my son? Is it the name of a small Gaelic farm animal?  Nope.  Calgary is my hometown and by chance, it is also one of the best Cities in the World!

Calgary is a dynamic, young ( founded in 1885) city of over 1,000,000 people!  We are the largest city in the Province of Alberta and the energy capital of Canada. ( Think Dallas, Houston or Denver...without the guns!)  Most of our economy is based on Oil and Gas, and because of this Calgary is home to the most millionaires per capita in Canada.  The population is one of the most educated in the country and the people of Calgary are quite young also, with an average age of under 40.  These factors make for an interesting population of young, middle class families.

With Banff, Alberta less than 90 Minutes away, Calgary is a tourism hot spot in the Winter. Calgary is known around the world for their hospitality and this reputation must have started in 1988 when it hosted the Olympic Winter Games.  At the time, it was considered one of the most successful Olympics in history and its volunteer base became a model for future Olympic hosts.  Even with the worldwide exposure from the Olympics, Calgary is best known for the Calgary Stampede!

As a tribute to its Western Heritage,  The Calgary Stampede is held every July ( it started in 1912) and over 1,000,000 people visit the Stampede grounds to partake in the events. I would compare it to Mardi Gras Meets Las Vegas!!  The whole City shuts down for 10 days while everyone parties, attends stampede breakfasts and attends the rodeo and chuck wagon races. You stay up all night long, then head into "work" and do it all over again.   It is an amazing thing to see a suit and tie city turn into the "wild west" for nearly two weeks, with Cowboy hats and boots are worn with pride.

Are these advertisements not awesome!

Calgary is a hockey mad town!  We love the Calgary Flames ( who play in the Saddledome...I told you we loved our western heritage!) and all things hockey.  We also have a Canadian Football League team ( 3 downs instead of 4) called the Stampeders that play from June to November.  Calgary was also a huge wrestling town during the 1960's to 1980's, with Stampede Wrestling making Calgary home.  In fact, many people think that Bret "Hitman" Hart is the most famous Calgarian in the world.

Calgary really is a wonderful, clean and friendly city that is one of the best places to live in the world. ( Did I already say that?..... )  I love this town and I am so proud when I travel and people tell me that they had a wonderful time visiting my hometown!

Retro TV Friday! The Raccoons

9:59 AM Posted by CalgaryDaddy

After a few week hiatus, I am back with a new Retro TV Friday Post!  This week, I dive back into some old retro Canadiana with the classic cartoon.....  The Raccoons!

The Raccoons ran on the air from 1985 - 1992 and I loved this show when I was young.  This show used to be a Sunday night staple in my house and I could not wait to watch it.

The series features the adventures in the Evergreen Forest, "quiet, peaceful, serene", (which is depicted to be in Western Canada) of Bert Raccoon and his friends Ralph and Melissa, particularly in their attempts to thwart the industrialist actions of pink aardvark Cyril Sneer and his trio of pig henchmen. Another interesting character was the capitalist Mr. Knox—a crocodile with a New Orleans accent. Cyril's son Cedric is Bert's best friend.

Usually, the series would feature the main characters learning major life lessons in teamwork, friendship, cooperation, and sometimes just helping out their fellow friends that live near the forest, human and animal alike, tangling with the tyrannical tycoon Cyril Sneer, who does not let anything as trivial as nature's defining highlights (trees, lakes, etc) prevent him attempting to obtain a profit.  ( Source: Wikipedia)

I used to love the adventures and the cool hockey jerseys that the raccoons wore!  I was also a huge fan of Cyril Sneer ( Think Donald Trump) and his cigar ravaged voice!  This poor man was always thwarted in his many attempt to ruin the forest for profit.   In fact, I still imitate old Cyril from time to time.

This show is still rockin on Teletoon Retro in Canada and I think it is one of the old 1980's classics for sure!

Any memories?

Baby's First Car Trip!

8:38 AM Posted by CalgaryDaddy

Kyron's First Road Trip!  Too bad it was not on better circumstances....

After a long battle with Cancer, my Uncle Tommy passed away last week.  Becky, Kyron and I headed up to Edmonton for the funeral last weekend, which went well. I was amazed at how many lives my Uncle Tommy had touched and he will be missed, but never forgotten.

It was also the first time that my extended family got to meet Kyron!  I had planned a few different trips to visit after he was born, but the trip getting delayed.  I guess there really is nothing like a funeral to bring a family together!  Kyron was a big hit and I was able to get some wonderful pictures and videos of him with his Nana, Aunts, Uncles and cousins.

Edmonton is only 3 hours north of Calgary, so of course we drove.  This was Kyron's first lengthy car trip, so we were not sure how this would go?  We were pleasantly surprised at how well baby Kyron did!  He slept the entire way up there and almost the whole way back.  We had to stop half way to feed him on the way home and he did get a little fussy about 20 minutes outside of Calgary.  He also slept all through the night in the hotel ( playpen) which was great!

We are planning a trip to San Francisco in September, so this was a good first indication of what we can expect in a few months. Based on this experience, I think he will be an excellent traveller!

Any good/bad experiences with baby's and car trips?

Extraordinary Measures DVD Giveaway! In Stores May 18, 2010

8:46 AM Posted by CalgaryDaddy

When I first saw the preview for this new movie just after Christmas, I was intrigued by the story and thought I would would share the trailer and synopsis with everyone!  Extraordinary Measures is now coming out on DVD and Blu-Ray on May 18, 2010 and the folks at Sony Pictures Home Entertainment have generously offered to give a copy away to one of my readers!

Extraordinary Measures, stars Harrison Ford (who also serves as Executive Producer), Brendan Fraser, and Keri Russell. Extraordinary Measures is inspired by the true story of John Crowley, a man who defied conventional wisdom and great odds, and risked his family's future to pursue a cure for his children's life threatening disease.

From his working class roots, John Crowley (Brendan Fraser) has finally begun to taste success in corporate America. Supported by his beautiful wife Aileen (Keri Russell) and their three children, John is on the fast track. But just as his career is taking off, Crowley walks away from it all when his two youngest children, Megan and Patrick, are diagnosed with a fatal disease. With Aileen by his side, harnessing all of his skill and determination, Crowley teams up with a brilliant, but unappreciated and unconventional scientist, Dr. Robert Stonehill (Harrison Ford). Together they form a bio-tech company focused on developing a life-saving drug. One driven to prove himself and his theories, the other by a chance to save his children, this unlikely alliance eventually develops into mutual respect as they battle the medical and business establishments in a fight against the system – and time.

The DVD and Blu-Ray will be released on May 18, 2010 and can be purchased wherever Movies are sold

As I stated before,  I cannot imagine what it must be like for parents with sick children and my heart really goes out to them.  It reminds me how lucky me and my wife really are.

Merino Kids Baby Sleep Bag Review and Giveaway

9:53 AM Posted by CalgaryDaddy

In honor of May being "Better Sleep Month", the folks at Merino Kids Baby Sleep Bags are promoting the benefits of baby sleep bags!  As parents to a 4 months old boy, they have asked me to do a review of their unique product!

Becky and I have used a few different brands/styles of sleepsacks for Kyron since he was born, with varying results.  After using the Merino Kids sleepbag for a few weeks, we are amazed at the quality of this product.  The Merino Kids line is made with such quality and durability in mind that I would never purchase another brand again.  While the pricing may seem a little higher then some of the competition, the Merino Kids sleep bag really is a superior product and you definitely get what you pay for!

  • All-year-round sleep sacks for babies up to two years and toddlers two to four years. ( That is not a typo!  The sacks are adjustable in length to fit kids up to 2 years old!
  • Natural cuddly soft allergy-safe New Zealand merino. ( Merino is the world's finest natural fiber, one-tenth the thickness of a human hair. Since merino fiber is much finer than synthetic fibers for a given weight, it contains more air spaces for better insulation!)

  • Merino regulates temperature so baby won't overheat. ( Babies can take as long as a year to develop the full capability to regulate their own body temperature. Just a few degrees of variation in room temperature can cause them to overheat or wake up cold. Only merino fabric has the remarkable natural ability to regulate a baby's body temperature to create the perfect safe micro-climate around their body )   Becky confirmed that she loves the fact that Kyron is not sweating on the back of his neck in the morning due to the temperature regulation.  This cannot be said for the other sleep bags we used.

  • Patented safety belt aperture for car seat or stroller.  ( Becky and I love this feature!  Recently, we picked him up from Grandmas and he was sound asleep.  We did not have to remove him from the sleepbag to put him into his car seat because of this cool feature!)

  • Reduces certain risk factors associated with SIDS.

Does he look comfy or what?

Here is a video of Kyron waking up in his Merino Kids SleepBag!

Becky and I really love the Merino Kids Sleepbag and would recommend it to any parent.  The features and product quality really make is stand out from its competitors.  For more information on this cool product, head over to their website at

Happy First Mothers Day Becky!

1:23 PM Posted by CalgaryDaddy

I just wanted to do a quick post to say Happy First Mothers Day to my beautiful wife Becky!  She is an amazing mom to Kyron and our Fur-Babies ( Copper, Roo and Pebbles).  As a first time mom, I know Becky was unsure of how she would adjust, but I knew that she would be an amazing mother.  She really is a natural and I am so amazed at what she does as a mom.

Like I have said before on here, Kyron hit the "conception lottery" when he got Becks as a mommy!

We love you so much and are thankful for everything that you do for us!

MinoHD Flip Camcorder Review and Giveaway! Perfect Mothers Day Gift for Busy Mom's!

10:05 AM Posted by CalgaryDaddy

Looking for a perfect personalized Mother's Day Gift for Busy Moms?

Like most people, I am simply amazed at the speed in which new technology enters our lives.  I just turned 33 and I can remember those big bulky shoulder camcorders ( remember those?)  that looked sooooo cool in the late 80's and early 90's!  As parents of a new baby boy, we constantly find ourselves scrambling between devices when we want to record something funny that Kyron is doing.  It really is a pain to have to switch between out our bulky-ish handheld camcorder and digital camera when we need to shoot something.  Well, I cant tell you that those days are now over now that I have the Flip MinoHD Camcorder, which the folks at Flip asked to me to review!

The Flip MinoHD really is the most convenient HD Video Camera on the market and I have not seen anything quite like it!  Its look can be best described as a mix between a Digital Camera + MP3 Player + Cell Phone!  Its is super small and fits easily into your pocket ( it literally fits in the palm of your hand.)  We often decide to leave our handheld Camcorder at home due its size, but with the leek design of Flip MinoHD, we really can take this video camera everywhere!  Parents will love the size of this when filming school concerts, soccer or hockey games!

  •  Easy To Use.  It took me about 30 seconds to figure out how to use it and the buttons on the Flip MinoHD are fairly simple and easy to operate. In case your not sure where the record button is, they’ve made it simple with a big red button right in the middle.

  • Easy to Share:  The Flip MinoHD comes with built in FlipShare software that allows you to upload, edit and share on YouTube or Myspace with ease.   You can even create fun video cards to send to your friends.  It was so easy, that even this techno-surf could use it!  ( In fact, a video that would usually take over 1 hour to load from my digital camera onto youtube took less than 2 minutes when I used the FlipShare software!!!)  Also, you can plug it into your TV for a quick share with friends!

  • Tech Features:  Records Up to one hour of HD Video. ( Which is perfect for most family uses.) 4 GB Internal Memory.  Built in rechargeable battery! ( Just plug it into your USB port to charge!)
Fully Customizable!

One of the coolest features about this camera is that it can be customized with an image of your choice!  You can have a personalized picture imprinted on the camera, like the one shown.  Where else can you get that feature?  Check out the link here for the endless possibilities in how you can personalize your own Mino HD Flip!

Visit  to give it a try!

Here is a quick video that I shot of Kyron waking up with the Flip MinoHD Camera!

This camera is perfect for busy families that love to shoot quality video quickly and easily.  It is not meant to replace the expensive equipment used professional videographers, but this really designed for everyday family use.

Where can I get one?

Visit the Flip Mino HD Site here or for a list of retailers at the link here
