Kyron Finds His Fingers!

12:46 PM Posted by CalgaryDaddy

I had to share this quick video that me and my wife took earlier this week!  Baby Kyron discovered his fingers and I guess he finds them pretty tasty as he just can't get enough in this video.  I guess its not a good thing to let them suck their thumbs/fingers etc, as it will mess up their teeth later, but it was too cute not to share.

I was never much of a finger/thumb sucker as a child but apparently Becky sure was!  I guess he must get it from her.

Have a good weekend!

Best Father/Son Song Ever!

9:08 AM Posted by CalgaryDaddy

Sappy Song Thursdays?

I thought I would share an amazing song that give me the chills every time I listen to it!  Personally, I think that it has to be the best Daddy/Son song of all time.  When I hear this song, ( by Canadian country singer, Gord Bamford) I get choked up thinking about my boys.  Most parenting songs are gender neutral at best, but often focus of "Daddy's Little Girl" themes, so I find this song especially unique!

Once you have kids, I find that the meaning of songs often change and some songs just become more and more special!  Have a listen....

What do you think?  What is your favorite dad/son song?

Kyron the Monkey and his Big Boy Baby Swing!

7:34 PM Posted by CalgaryDaddy

Well since my big boy Kyron is now two weeks old, I guess he wants to be doing all the cool stuff that two week old boys like to do!  He seems to be getting bored with staring into space and waiting for the next adventure, so I thought I would see if he could fit into his big boy swing!

We bought this swing thing on a shopping trip to Montana in October ( Our Thanksgiving weekend...not theirs) and had it sitting in Mr. Mon-Ky's room awaiting its first use!  I finally put the batteries in it tonight and let Kyron take it for a spin! It has five different speeds but unfortunately, it is lacking the music and vibrate feature we thought it had.  Oh well...

Here we go..... ( I love the half "shrug" he gives in response to my last question!)

I hope he gets some good use out of this!

Handprints? Footprints? Inking My Baby!

9:58 AM Posted by CalgaryDaddy

I cannot believe that my son Kyron is two weeks old today....time sure is flying by!  My wife and I are trying to figure out the best way to take Kyron's hand and footprints to include them in his baby book.  At first glance this seemed like an pretty straightforward activity but now we find that we are actually at a loss as to the correct way to go about this?

We have been looking around for the past week for the materials to do the job safely and assumed that there would be a ton of products to help with this, but we cannot find any "stamp kits" for kids.  Do we buy a regular ink pad?  Is there a special one that is safe for kids? I do not want to buy ink that will leave him looking like a Smurf or send him to the emergency ward!  I also would prefer using the Calgary Police Service jail standard issue ink if possible!  We never imagined this would be such a chore!

I think the ink footprints are pretty cool and will serve as a lasting reminder of how tiny the little guy once was.  I have them in my baby book and I think that they are just too cute to look at!  I bet there were no safety considerations for ink and baby's feet in 1977 when mine were done, but I guess this is what they call "progress" right?

We have come across a ton of those plaster kids to imprint their hands and feat, but this will not work for the baby book.  We just want some ink darn it!  Any suggestions?

Baby Hiccups

5:09 PM Posted by CalgaryDaddy

I can't help but laugh every time our newborn son Kyron gets the hiccups!  He used to get them while still in the womb and my wife's whole stomach would move, which in turn would send me into a state of amazement.  Baby Kyron seems to get them every couple of days lately but they only last a few minutes and then BAM!...they are gone.

I wonder if there is a trick to get rid of them or if they just go away on their own?  I know as adults we are always given the strangest advise on what makes them go away!  ( Drink water upside down, scaring the person or my wife's favorite "Rosie O'Donnell trick, which involves a glass of water and a spoon!)   Anyways, I thought I would share this funny video of Kyron the Hiccup-potamus....

 Too Cute!

Extraordinary Measures Movie Release

9:29 AM Posted by CalgaryDaddy

I first saw the preview for this new movie just after Christmas and as a new parent, I was intrigued by the story.  I was even more surprised when the good folks at CBS Films sent me and my wife an invite to the pre-release screening, which I thought was very kind of them.  Unfortunately, we had a Parenting Class that we could not get out of, so we could not make it.  That said, I think that this movie will resonate with any parent so I thought I would share the trailer and synopsis with everyone!

Extraordinary Measures, stars Harrison Ford (who also serves as Executive Producer), Brendan Fraser, and Keri Russell. Extraordinary Measures is inspired by the true story of John Crowley, a man who defied conventional wisdom and great odds, and risked his family's future to pursue a cure for his children's life threatening disease.

From his working class roots, John Crowley (Brendan Fraser) has finally begun to taste success in corporate America. Supported by his beautiful wife Aileen (Keri Russell) and their three children, John is on the fast track. But just as his career is taking off, Crowley walks away from it all when his two youngest children, Megan and Patrick, are diagnosed with a fatal disease. With Aileen by his side, harnessing all of his skill and determination, Crowley teams up with a brilliant, but unappreciated and unconventional scientist, Dr. Robert Stonehill (Harrison Ford). Together they form a bio-tech company focused on developing a life-saving drug. One driven to prove himself and his theories, the other by a chance to save his children, this unlikely alliance eventually develops into mutual respect as they battle the medical and business establishments in a fight against the system – and time.

Personally, I cannot wait to see this.  I cannot imagine what it must be like for parents with sick children and my heart really goes out to them.  It reminds me how lucky me and my wife really are.

Baby's First Bath!

2:05 PM Posted by CalgaryDaddy

It sure looked a lot easier in the hospital when the nurse did it!  Mr. Mon-Ky had his first bath at home yesterday  ( They said twice a week, so we were cutting it close.  Does this make us bad parents, lol?)   and it was pretty uneventful.  He cried in the hospital when he had his first bath but this time, the cries were actually low key.

He seemed to like getting his big body washed.  It was definitely a two person job to hold his 10lb frame while cleaning him, all the while trying to avoid getting the umbilical cord wet. ( Which fell off this afternoon!)   I cannot wait until he is old enough to play with his awesome bath toys that his "Guncles" Pete and PJ got him.  I can already hear me singing him the 1980's classic Sesame Street  "Rubber Ducky" song by Ernie!

We were lucky enough to get the bath on tape, which should make for some great wedding video embarrassment in the future!  Also, his hair went straight into his odd spike/faux-hawk thing once it dried.  Look at him in the pic below, he looks pretty content after his bath! What's with the half smirk?  What does he know but doesn't want to share? Hmmmmm....

I just hope that the baby soap does not wipe off that sweet new baby smell of Kyron's.  Did I tell you how much I love him yet?

Feel free to share your funny bath stories, so I know what to expect!

Kyron is One Week Old Already!

10:18 PM Posted by CalgaryDaddy

Wow...where did this week go?  Last Monday, my little Mon-Ky, Kyron was born and shook our whole world upside down in a good way!  Becky and I were laughing tonight when we thought that just one week ago, we did not have this little man in out lives. The birth of a baby really is a miracle and makes you think about your priorities in life.  It has only been one week but I cannot even remember what my life was like without him.  It is almost like being reborn.

I have been wanting to blog every day, but I have been zzzzzzz.....just to darn zzzzzz.... tired.  I have had so many things to share but do not even know where to begin.  Chris over at Clever Father told me to write everything down as it goes so quick, so I took his advice and my wife is keeping a daily notebook of the weeks events.  So many funny things have happened that I will have years worth of blogs post, should I choose to embarrass my little Mon-Ky!   I thought I would just have a quick version of the weeks events!

I had last week off, which was fantastic, but returned to work today.  Becky is off work for 1 year and I am so jealous that she will get to spend all this time with Kyron!  I found the time so special and wish I could spend all day cuddling my son and hanging out with my wife.

Sleep:  Our Fondest Memory!  If we were not already exhausted from the 32 Hour labour ( I will let my wife guest post on that one thank you!) or the two days of previous sleep deprivation, it probably would not be so bad!  Baby Kyron usually sleeps for 3 hour periods at a time, which leaves us time for a quick nap....if we were smart enough to use that time to nap!  Becky has pretty much let me sleep during the night and we will trade off and I will let her sleep for an hour or two in the night or early morning!  I should not complain about being tired, as I have no idea where Becky is getting her energy from.

Visitors:  "King" Kyron finally held court with his public this weekend and it was awesome to share his arrival with our family and friends.  Becky's Mom came over on the weekend and made us a ton of pre-made meals to freeze so we do not have to worry about cooking for a long time!  Our dear friends Sherry and Stu also came by and brought a Lasagna and some Apple Pie, which was to die for!  We also had a great visit with Jen and Darcy, who have two small boys that are my buddies!  Kyron seemed to take to his visitors and I hope he will be a social boy when he gets older.  We should have a steady stream of visitors over the next week or so and I cant wait to see everyone!

Our Fur Babies:   We were really curious about how our "fur babies" ( see intro to Copper/Pebbles and Roo here) were going to react when we brought baby home.  I am happy to report that all went well and I hope to do a post about it soon!

Temperament:  Kyron is a pretty sweet, quiet baby. ( Knock on wood)  He is not much of a crier, except when he is hungry.  We have taken him out shopping a few times and he is not much of a fuss-er at all.  Please Kyron, do not ever change!

Feeding:  Again...I will leave this to my wife, should she ever want to guest post!

Kyron's Luck:  Ky definitely hit the "conception lottery" as he could not have gotten a better mom.  Becky is a natural and I am so proud of the job she is doing.  Sometimes I watch her with him and I get tears to my eyes when I see how tender and loving she is with him.  I told her today that Kyron is one lucky boy to have her as his momma.

I hope to get some more posts coming!  But first...I must sleep!

Welcome Home Kyron!

1:41 PM Posted by CalgaryDaddy

After a 48 Hr. Stay in the hospital following the delivery, I was so excited to finally get Becky and Kyron back home yesterday!  Its sucked not being able to sleep in the hospital room with Mom and baby, but what can you do?  We had a private room and it wasn't like I was looking for a bed, but rules are rules.   The nights I had to spend here at home without them were awful, as I could not rest well alone.  I kept wondering what they were doing and how they were feeling.  I even ended up texting Becky at 3am to chat.  I hope I never have to spend any more time away from them again!

Mr. Mon-Ky has had a few changes of address recently which must be confusing for him!  First Mommy's tummy, then some strange hospital room and now his nice warm home.

Here are some pics of Mon-Ky's new living quarters!

We did go with the Behr Disney "Christopher Robin Sage" paint for half of the wall!  The border was a challenge to locate but I found it on ebay!

For now, Kyron will be sleeping in his bassinet in our room.  But these are the pics of his nursery!

Wordless Wednesday: A Video Of My Newborn Son Kyron!

I've Got Baby News!!! Its a BOY!

11:01 PM Posted by CalgaryDaddy

I just wanted to quickly share that my beautiful wife Becky gave birth today ( January 11, 2009) at 12:07am to a healthy BABY BOY!

 Kyron Ray Byciuk
 9lbs 7oz   ( He is a big'un!)
20.5 Inches long.

Kyron ( Taddy!) is just the sweetest, most calm baby ever. ( So  He looks just like his mom, except maybe he has good hair like his daddy.  ( He has quite the thatch of dark hair, and after his bath, it looked like some kind of Faux-Hawk variation.)
My wife is the toughest, bravest person I have ever met.  After this weekend, she really is my hero.  Ill post more on our adventure later, but after 72 hours with less than 8 hours of sleep....I must get to bed!  Thanks again to everyone who sent us a message of encouragement or was thinking of us, we really appreciated it!

I had to leave them at the hospital tonight and cannot wait to go back tomorrow.   I think I would give anything that I own just to have another hour of Skin to Skin cuddling with my newborn while I watch his Mommy sleep.

( The happiest Daddy and husband in the whole wide world!)

Induction Time! ( The Labour Kind....not The Hall of Fame Kind!)

7:16 PM Posted by CalgaryDaddy

Induction Time!

Well everyone....we are near the end of the journey!  Becky was due on 12/31/2009 which makes Taddy officially 1 week late!  Thanks to everyone that posted and emailed your tips to get the labour moving, but unfortunately Taddy has a mind of his/her own!

The doctors are going to try and induce Becky tomorrow ( and not with with a dose of Sex, spicy foods or long walks!) so we should see labour begin this weekend for sure!  I am really hoping for a safe and uneventful delivery and I cannot stress how proud I am of my beautiful wife as we head into the final days of her pregnancy.  She has been really amazing throughout the whole experience and I just cannot begin to express how much I love her!  I am pretty relaxed about the whole thing because I have such an amazing wife!

I hope to be doing my best Jersey Shore Fist Pumping this weekend, followed by a fat cigar!

Has anyone had experience with Labour Induction?

Talk soon and wish us luck!

Almost One Week Past The Due Date....Still No Baby!

10:05 AM Posted by CalgaryDaddy

Due Date:  12/31/2009.

Today's Date: 01/05/2009.

Diagnosis.....  No Baby!

Thanks to everyone that has emailed checking to see if  "Taddy" has arrived yet!  As you can see above, we are just about one week past the due date and still no baby!  I read some interesting stats today about due dates that I thought I would share with everyone!
  • Only 5% of babies are born on their actual due date!
  • 50% are born within a week of their due date.
  • 90% are born within 2 weeks of their due date! Yikes!

Becky is now off work so she has had time to relax and get everything ready in advance of Taddy's arrival.  She is actually doing quite well given her late pregnancy condition and I am surprised that she has as much energy as she does.   On Sunday, we received the wall paper boarder that we ordered and finally finished the baby room!  She is through the "nesting" stage and now has a calmness about her which is actually quite cute.  ( **Sigh**)   We are both super excited for Taddy's arrival and hope to meet him/her within the next few days.

Over the past week, we have received so much advice about how to get the labour moving along.  Here are some of our favorites:

1) Go for a long walk. ( This is the most common comment. Becky is not built for walking right now, lol.)

2) Some suggest that having Relations ( aka Sex) will speed up the labour process. ( In Canada, there is an old law that makes it illegal to have relations with a woman over 40 weeks pregnant.  It has something to due with the cold weather and migrating bird patterns I believe. :)

3) A nurse suggested that Becky "rub her nipples" to get the labour moving along.  Why? We have no idea.

4) We overheard a mother saying that she was going to drink "Castor" oil. sure to let me know how that one works out for you.

What are your suggestions?  What are the craziest old wives tales you have ever heard of?  What works!

We will keep you posted!

Happy New Year! My Favorite Parts of 2009!

2:46 PM Posted by CalgaryDaddy

Happy New Year Everyone!

It seems that each and every year that goes by, my life keeps getting better and better.  2009 was an exceptional year and while I am sad to see it go, I look forward to 2010!  I thought I would share some of my favorite things from 2009 with everyone!

January:  I discovered this thing called blogging!  I started my other blog,, which is a more slanted toward local/provincial politics.  It really changed my out look on some ideas and opened my mind up to some alternative viewpoints and the use of this thing we call the "inter-web".

March:  Me and my wife spent 5 days in Las Vegas as a mid year getaway!  Vegas had a different vibe in the spring, likely due to the economic situation.  I am pleased to say that this Canadian definitely did his part to stimulate the US economy with my donations to the casino's!  Even though we have almost ten casino's in Calgary, I never, never learn!  Oh well....

May:  We found out that Becky was pregnant!  Yahoo!

June:   My nephew Tate ( Tatertot) was born!  Look at this kid...cute or what?

July:  Met the Prime Minister of Canada.  Sweet. Sweet. Sweet.

And went to New York City for 10 days on vacation!

October:  Going to Great Falls, Montana on a Baby Shopping fiesta! wife went kind of nuts on the baby clothes there, but the deals were too hard to pass by!

November:  Starting this blog!  Thanks to everyone that stops by for a quick read and especially all of you that leave your comments!

December:  Getting "Taddy's" room ready for the big arrival!  Seeing my wife in her constant state of pregnancy "cuteness" aka the "GLOW" is amazing. I appreciate her allowing me to do this blog, even though I made a bit of fun of her!

While writing this quick post, I have been reminded that I truly have been blessed with a wonderful wife, family and friends.  I look forward to sharing some of our journey once the little one arrives.

Happy New Year!
