Do All Men Put On Weight When Their Partners Are Pregnant?

8:40 PM Posted by CalgaryDaddy

I was thinking today ( over that handful of mint chocolates that my wife keeps eating) about my ever expanding waistline and wondered to my self... do all men put on weight when their partners are pregnant?   Is it just me?  When Becks got pregnant in April, I was rocking steady at 160lbs.  Fast forward 8 months...I am at a not so steady 181 lbs.  ( Yes, I am vain and measured myself at her doctors appointment the other day!)  I know the books all say that women should put on between 20-35 lbs when pregnant, which is all fine and dandy, but what about Daddy?

Becky and I have always been suckers for treats, but this fantastic diet has just exploded since she became pregnant.  She is not really craving anything strange, just sweets and Ice Cream.  As these are my two favorite things, I have been more than happy to enjoy them with her.  Besides, who am I to turn down delicious chocolaty goodness?  What kind of partner would I be if I let her eat these tasty goodies all alone.  I think it shows that I am supporting her needs throughout her pregnancy!  Anyways, I am 99% sure that this is the culprit for my 20lbs of added "sympathy weight".

It has gotten so bad, that I even asked Santa for a treadmill or stationary bike to help work off this baby weight in the new year as I doubt that I will have any time to go to the gym once the baby is born.  Besides, I don't even belong to a Gym, so who am I kidding!  All I know is something has got to give.  And it will likely be my zipper if I don't slow it down!

What is a normal weight gain for men during pregnancy?  Is their a normal?  Is it just me and my lack of self control?  What do you think?

Hi Shane, Just voted for you! My husband didn't gain an ounce during my pregnancy which was a real piss off. Now 3 1/2 years later, I'm still carrying around 25 pounds of baby weight but this time, I'm determined, it's going. Bought my slim fast and I'm on a mission!

Whenever we're out & my guy refuses a drink, eats a little more or talks about his weight, one of us exclaims, "We're pregnant!" It's fun to say it together. We're only 3 1/2 months in, so I'm not sure if there will be a significant gain, but I'm interested to find out! If he did gain 20-30 pounds, that crazy man would probably still look better than me. He does that.

My hubby also packed on some lb.'s while I was preggers. Like you said, he couldn't let me eat all alone! He gained about 10 lb.'s but has since lost it all by playing in a ball hockey league. Enjoy the freedom to eat anything!

Hmmm...good question! My hubby gained some weight with both of my pregnancies, but I blame it more on the season. You see, he tends to eat more, and heartier, in the winter. My boys were born in May and July, so I was pregnant mostly in the fall/winter or colder months (since it's cold here until April). Therefore, he ate more!

I didn't have cravings really (more food aversions actually...yeah, that sucked!), so I don't blame the pregnancy. BUT, and this is a big BUT, any weight he puts on, he loses by just sleeping. Ok, so not by sleeping, but seriously, he loses it like over night! Not fair. At. All!

So don't worry, you'll lose it. The lack of sleep will make you not so hungry the first few weeks, so before you know it, you'll be slim and trim again! ;-)

Thanks for stopping by the blog today!

I wish Stu would put on sympathy weight! I found I was eating the same amount of food as Stu by the end of pregnancy! I would eat 5 plates of food at a buffet just to keep up to him!
